Patrick McCully

Summary of Experience:
Mr. McCully has a B.A. in archaeology and anthropology from the University of Nottingham, England (1987).

Mr. McCully is author of Silenced Rivers: The Ecology and Politics of Large Dams, a book that explains the history and politics of dam building worldwide. It describes the technical, safety and economic problems associated with dams, and the structure of the international dam-building industry. He has written many articles and reports on issues related to dams, water and energy policies, civil society, international financial institutions and climate change. Mr. McCully is also the co-author of Imperiled Planet and The Road to Rio: An NGO Action Guide to Environment and Development.

Mr. McCully is a member of the Steering Committee of the UN Environment Programme's Dams and Development Project and a member of the UNEP Dams and Development Forum. He was formerly a member of the World Commission on Dams Forum and of the Reference Group, which oversaw the establishment of the World Commission on Dams. He is a board member of EcoEquity, a US-based NGO, which advocates for a just and effective global climate treaty.

Mr. McCully joined International River Network’s staff in 1994. From 1989 to 1992, Mr. McCully was assistant editor and then co-editor of the UK- journal “The Ecologist.” In 1992-93, Mr. McCully was editor of NGONET, an information service for NGOs based in Uruguay.
