Dr. Peter Miller
Professor and Senior Scholar of Philosophy

Summary of Experience:

Peter Miller received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Yale University in 1967. He is currently Professor and Senior Scholar in Philosophy and the Centre for Forest Interdisciplinary Research (C-FIR) at the University of Winnipeg. He is a former Chair of the Philosophy Department and was the founding Treasurer of the International Society for Environmental Ethics and former President of the Canadian Society for the Study of Practical Ethics.

Dr. Miller is also an Adjunct Professor at the Natural Resources Institute and Department of Philosophy and an Associate of the Centre for Professional and Applied Ethics at the University of Manitoba. He is a Member of the Manitoba Round Table on Sustainable Development and of the East Side Round Table for Land Use Planning. He is Vice-President of T.R.E.E. (Time to Respect Earth's Ecosystems - a coalition of Manitoba environmental groups concerned with forest issues) and a Vice President of the Manitoba Model Forest.

Dr. Miller and colleague Dr. Lena McCourtie received the Sheffield Award from the Canadian Society for the Study of Higher Education for the best paper published in their journal in 1997.

His recent research focuses on environmental ethics, ecological integrity and health, forest policy, public participation, and ways to elicit and incorporate citizen and stakeholder values into resource management. He is currently Principal Investigator and Co-investigator for two projects, funded by the Sustainable Forest Management Network, on public involvement and public values in forest management.

Recent Public Interventions:

In addition to the current intervention on Wuskwatim before the CEC, Peter Miller led the intervention by TREE and RCM in Manitoba Hydro rate hearings before the Public Utilities Board, urging the adoption of inverted rates as a conservation measure. January 2002 to December 2003.
